LINK Transit for Steinbach

SEEC is working to create an affordable, reliable public transit system within Steinbach. Our transit working group, together with Pat Porter Active Living Centre, have created a plan and have presented it to Steinbach City Council. We continue to work together!

LINK Transit aims to provide reliable and affordable transit services to the residents of Steinbach, enhancing their mobility and connectivity within the city, reducing social inequalities, and creating greater links within our community.

Public transit in Steinbach has been a topic of conversation for decades. SEEC believes that affordable, accessible public transit for all is one way to meet the vision of a fair and just community that empowers and provides opportunities for all people to thrive.

How will LINK Transit work? Residents, customers and employees will call in to request a pick-up or can request a pick-up through an online app, then wait at the designated stop in their neighbourhood. Our innovative app will use the pick-up requests from the app and call-ins, input them into our system, and plan a route for our drivers. LINK Transit will have designated stops throughout the city where the app will direct people to wait to be picked up, and transit will end at another of these designated stops.

LINK Transit will also provide transport to special events in Steinbach - Summer in the city, events at the new South East Event Centre, Pioneer Days, etc. People attending the event can park in a designated lot elsewhere in the city and LINK Transit will shuttle them to the event!

MEDIA LINKS for Public Transit

  • “Public transit is the #1 need for newcomers to our community.”

    — Olesja Schwabauer, Eastman Immigration Services.

  • “Transportation is critical for families with young children because it enables reliable access to healthcare, education, childcare, and essential resources like food and supplies; without it, isolation can compound existing challenges and deepen economic and social disparities

    — Jo-anne Dalton, Steinbach Family Resources

  • “Public transit is very valuable for seniors who cannot walk long distances or who cannot drive. It will enable them to get to a variety of venues and connect with others, alleviating loneliness.”

    — Doug Enns, Pat Porter Active Living Centre

  • “Our people have to walk everywhere they go, often more than 5 miles a day. Having public transit would mean they could actually access their support resources and get to appointments independently.”

    - Charlene Kroeker, Steinbach Community Outreach

  • “Our guests have to walk miles every day. They wear out shoes that they can't afford to replace faster than the average joe.”

    - Charlene Kroeker, Steinbach Community Outreach

  • "We are so thankful that a great group like the South East Equity Coalition has put so much thought and effort into the importance and value of public transit here in Steinbach. We envision this being such a valuable tool in bringing people together here at our Centre. So, whether you park near or far, no question this will help us gather, play and grow here."

    - Michelle Sawatzky-Koop, Southeast Event Centre

  • "Each year, the Steinbach Arts Council reaches thousands of participants through recreational programs and concerts, and we know that public transit will play a critical role in keeping those opportunities accessible for individuals with disabilities, seniors, and those without their own transportation. It is essential to breaking barriers, ensuring equal opportunities for everyone."

    - David Klassen, Steinbach Arts Council

  • .....One of the most common challenges our participants face is a lack of reliable transportation. Many do not have access to their own vehicle, which significantly limits their ability to move forward with independence and dignity. Public transportation is not just a convenience — it is a critical lifeline. It enables our participants to seek and maintain employment, attend appointments, access childcare, and meet their families’ basic daily needs. Reliable, affordable transit is a key factor in helping individuals transition out of crisis and into stability.......

    - Tracy Whitby, Executive Director, Agape House

  • “One of the biggest barriers for our clients in getting jobs is the lack of public transit.”

    - Kim Watts, EIA Counsellor, Employment and Income Assistance
